A How-to Guide for Good Eye Care

Loss of vision may happen to anyone and can be caused by many different factors.  Some health conditions may cause a slow loss of vision, genetic factors, aging and also a poor diet may contribute too.  Most eye problems do not show symptoms early enough.  It is therefore important to take good care of our eyes when they are still healthy rather than seeking for treatment when it is too late.

First of all, it is important to have a dilated eye exam once in a year.  This is because eye diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma do not give early symptoms.  They can only be detected by a dilated eye exam during their early stages.  Therefore, ensure to seek an experienced optician to do an eye exam regularly. It is advisable to eat a well-balanced diet including fruits and green vegetables such as kale or spinach.  Omega-3 fatty acids also have a lot of benefits to the eyes.  These can be obtained from most fish but particularly tuna, salmon, and halibut are rich in omega-3.  In addition to that carrots are also good for the health of your eyes especially when eaten raw or juiced.  This is because they are rich in vitamin A.

Smoking is bad for the health of your eyes.  It is known to cause cataracts and macular degeneration.  Study shows that the optic nerve may also be damaged by excessive smoking.  To save your vision, it is advisable to try and quit smoking.

It is also important to avoid too much exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays.  To protect your eyes from the UV rays, shop for a good pair of sunglasses that will block at least 99% of both UVA and UVB rays.  You may also opt to use polarized lenses when driving to reduce glare or side way protection of your eyes by using wrap around lenses.  By doing this, you will reduce chances of getting a cataract or suffering from macular degeneration.

When your job involves using hazardous materials such as welding jobs, it is important to wear protective goggles. This will save your eyes from the small metal parts that may get into your eyes while working.  These metals are dangerous and could cost your eyesight.  Some other sports like ice hockey and lacrosse are also risky to the eyes so safety glasses is a must have.  If you are working on the computer all day, it is advisable to use an anti-glare screen on the computer or use computer glasses.
